It's All About Me- 14 months

I know you think you'll always remember; but you won't. Write down when your kids do something that makes you laugh. I figure this is as good a place as any to do just that.

Here are a few things Marin does at 14 months to keep us on our toes and to keep us giggling...

- Marin loves to have her ears cleaned with q-tips. A little while ago Marin pointed at the bathroom cabinet door and grunted, which is her general sign for "open it", "I want that" or "show me". When I opened it she said, "Oooooo!" and pointed to the q-tips. I guess if you are just learning how things work in this world, little fuzzy pieces of cotton on the end of a small stick are something of interest. Add that they are housed in a glass jar that makes a "DING" sound when you open it, and Marin was hooked. So I said to Marin, "Those are q-tips" and proceeded to take one out and very gently put it in her ear. She was hooked. Every morning she goes back for more. I guarantee she has the cleanest ears in Kane County.

- When you say, "Marin how old are you?" she holds out one finger. This is new and I have to say, we taught her this. It's not something that she just learned on her own.

- When you say, "Marin how BIG are you?" she puts her arms above her head, and we say, "Soooooo BIG!" This she has been doing for a long time, and we did not teach her. I remember doing this with my brother, too, when he was a baby. Is this just something that all kids know how to do? A few months ago, we were at church with my Grandparents. At the end of the service, the pastor raised his arms to bless the congregation. As everyone bowed their heads in quiet reflection, Marin giggled and raised her hands up high. SO BIG!

- Marin really understands what you say when you talk to her. Our neighbor invited her into their yard to play with her children the other day, saying, "Marin, would you like to come over and play?" And Marin walked right over and helped herself like she thought she'd never ask. When we ask Marin if she wants to go outside, she runs to the door. If we tell her we're going to take the stroller, she goes to her stroller. If we tell her to come here so we can put her coat on, she brings her coat and comes. This detail of comprehension makes it especially apparent what a little stinker she is when you tell her no and she goes ahead and does it anyway-- and then looks back at you and smirks.

- She is learning the body parts, and likes to point them out. The first she learned was nose. She was feeding herself cottage cheese one day and Jason playful pointed out, "Hey! You have some cheese on your nose!" And Marin leaned over and pointed to Jason's nose. She also likes to point out Norah's nose. That is almost always followed by a wet kiss from her canine sister.

- Marin is learning to sign. A little over two months ago, we started teaching Marin a few signs when we noticed that she was having trouble expressing herself at mealtime. At first we taught her only "more" and "all done". She has recently started using these signs more and more now, including at times other than the dinner table. She also knows the "milk" sign. We are starting to incorporate "please" and "thank you", but mostly so that she gets used to saying them. We'll see how we do.

- Marin loves to explore, build, figure things out and gets into ev-ery-thing! She loves to learn how things work; to take something apart and put it back together again. She looks in every single cabinet for things to do this with. She loves her building blocks. The other day at my parent's house, Marin was putting a single cheerio inside the small hole at the top of her sippy cup, and using that as a soon. She sat for a long time, eating one cheerio at a time this way.

- Marin plays well on her own. Although she is constantly moving, as long as you are near by to watch her so that she doesn't crash, (she recently learned to climb up and into her highchair), she plays well on her own. She likes to "talk" to her dollies, or stack her blocks or carry books from one room to the other.

- When Marin really loves something she's eating, she lets you know it. She does this by throwing her head back, scrunching up her nose, pursing her lips, closing her eyes and going, "mmmmmmmm!" We love it!

- When we pick Marin up from daycare, she runs to us, hugs us, then grabs her jacket and her bag, waves to Miss Kathy and says, "Byyyyye!" and takes off down the sidewalk. One of these days I have to get this on film.

- Marin still loves to sing songs and dance. Now when you say, "Do you like to dance?" She starts shaking it right there. She really likes the 60's, which is hilarious to us. They really make her shake her groove thang!

- She loves to play peek-a-boo! We've been playing for a while, but it cracks her up every time. If she ever starts to get fussy, peek-a-boo is the way to this girls funny bone. She loves to be the peek-a-booee and the peek-a-booer. She especially loves to find Norries under the covers. She laughs and laughs and laughs at this!
We love every second of every day with out little angel. When people ask me, "How is Marin?" I always respond, "She is so much fun!"
