Daddy/Daughter Dance 2015!

This years Daddy/Daughter Dance was special because it took place on Marin's 6th Birthday, and it was Emilie's first time getting to go!  Both girls were so excited!!  They danced the night away with their friends, and during a dance with daddy, Emilie asked him to marry her.  Does it get any better?  It does, afterwards, they went out for ice cream with all of Marin's friends.

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman?

Not really, it's 25 below.

Let this, the winter of 2014 be known as the cold winter ever.  Seriously, it's like the 5th snowiest, coldest winter on record or something like that.

I blame Frozen, the Oscar nominated animated film about two sisters, one of which sets off an eternal winter.  My kids are OBSESSED with it.  We've seen it in the theaters three times- twice for the regular version and once for the sing along version.  I will admit, it's pretty cute.  But at this point, the whole art imitating fiction thing is getting a little too real.

None the less, we had a great day building a snowman, and having hot chocolate afterward.  Marin had to bring out her spray bottle to make the snow stick a little better, because it was so darn cold out.  But we still had fun!

Daddy/Daughter Dance

Our Park District hosted its annual Daddy/Daughter Dance the Sunday before Valentine's Day. You have to be a big three year old in order to participate, and Daddy was so excited to take Marin this year.

Marin picked out a special boutonniere for her Daddy a few days earlier. When the florist suggested that a red rose might be nice Marin responded, "Um, actually I think my Daddy's favorite color is blue." So Daddy got a blue and orange boutonniere. Daddy brought Marin a beautiful wrist corsage with a pink sparkly ribbon. She loved it!

Marin and Jason met friends Parker and Josh and B and Mike at the dance. The girls all had a blast dancing together and spending the evening with their daddies. Marin came home and told me all about it, and before she closed her eyes that night she told me, "Know what?! Daddy said we can go to the Daddy/Daughter Dance next year, too!"

Numbers 7, 8 and 32

It was another great weekend filled with celebrations, good friends, and laughter enough to have the cops called on us twice, marking visits seven and eight this summer. Per usual, the police were apologetic and embarrassed; they confirmed that we aren't doing anything wrong, and encouraged us to continue doing just what we are doing. Honestly, it really doesn't bother us. All of our other neighbors are so fantastic that we just can't worry about this one set of boringtons. This weekend our friends in blue told us that they are really more concerned with the neighbor calling for no good reason than they are with us. Apparently that neighbor has a bit of a history of being a cop caller for every. little. thing. And so the fun went on. And boy did we have a lot of it!

Friday night we celebrated Jason's birthday and kicked off the celebrations early, with a late afternoon happy hour. Jon took the train to our house after work, and Lindsay met us shortly after. A few of our neighbors came by, as did my parents. We picked up our babysitter and walked to dinner for a table of seven at our absolute favorite restaurant in town, Bien Trucha. The food is so good I can still taste it. We all shared taco tapas and enjoyed some delicious margaritas, and then headed home to relieve the babysitter. Marin had a great time with Caleigh again, and this time we remembered to give her a key so no one got locked out. We had a great night, stayed up wayyyyy past our bedtimes, and celebrated Jason's 32 great years.

Jon spent the night and Lindsay was spending the weekend, so Saturday we walked to Nosh for breakfast, and that afternoon I headed into the city to celebrate with Dana at her bachelorette party. I was only able to stay for a quick visit, because Mike, Becky and their son Joel were on their way from Indianapolis. Still, it was a great visit with my friends and such a welcome change from having to chat with each other with our kids in tow. We sipped champagne from a suite at the top of The Wit Hotel downtown overlooking the lake, and chatted about Dana's upcoming Louisville wedding!

Back at home, Joel and Marin were having a BLAST playing together in the sand, taking turns on their bikes, feeding each other applesauce, playing basketball, giving lots of hugs and kisses and speaking each others language the entire time. When I arrived back home, they were each covered head to toe in sand, and chatting together like they had spent their entire lives doing just that. After dinner, they took a bath together. They loved splashing and playing in the bubbles together and passed toy animals back and forth as they told each other what sound it made. After they were both dressed for bed, they piled in my lap and we read one of Marin's favorite stories. They both went to sleep in record time. Mike and Becky spent the night and we stayed up late talking, but called it a night in time for a great nights sleep.

Sunday we loaded Marin and Joel in the wagon and headed to breakfast at another great spot by us. The kids were both well behaved at breakfast and were sad when we got home and they had to say their goodbyes. But the fun didn't end there! Molly and Brian stopped over late in the afternoon so Marin got to love on them for a quick visit and then we headed to my parents house for a family celebration for Jason's birthday. We topped the whole weekend off with a walk to Graham's for ice cream.

The house is quiet today. I love when it is full of laughter and good friends and family. Is there anything better? I had the post weekend blues BAD last night. It was such a great weekend seeing so many of our family and friends that we feel so blessed to have in our lives. Luckily, there are only four days until the next weekend!

Curiosity Strikes- The Morning After

I can't believe that I have been beaten at my own game TWICE now. Jason 2, Johanna 0: Not cool people, not cool.

A lot of my friends (who apparently don't read my blog) have gotten baby bling. I sware. Are you out there girls? Defend me!! My marital pride is at stake.

As it stands now, apparently I am wrong AND unpopular. Awesome.

Curiosity Strikes

I'm curious about something here. It's half fueled by my inability to let anything go, and half by the sting of realization that I can't just announce my wishes to make them appear. (and if any of you can; we're officially not friends, and I'd like to know what world you live in.)

Raise your hand if you got a "push present" or "baby bling", which is the term I prefer. I don't care if it cost five dollars or five thousand dollars. I want to know if your husband gave you a present after you became a mother. And sure, the baby is joy enough. But we're talking material here, people. Madonna told it like it is- we're all a little bit material some days. You know it, and I know it.

Here are the requirements to "count":
1) it can't be something that you bought for yourself and then said was from him.
2) it can't be something that the two of you were going to buy anyway. (like my husband likes to say he bought me a house. Sorry charlie, doesn't count.)

I'm talking about your husband, in the few quiet seconds you had after your little miracle arrived, sitting you down and handing you something that he thoughtfully chose to thank you for gaining 30 plus pounds, throwing up around the clock, sacrificing what you ate and drank for 9 months, sacrificing how you slept for 9 months, inevitably being the designated driver for 9 months, and then going through 30 hours of labor, which most likely included the worst pain you've ever experienced (and that we all know he could never handle). It's been 14 months to the day for me- I think it's safe to say, it aint happenin.

Again- if you've been reading my blog for longer than a day, you know that I was over the moon thrilled to do all those things. And I have no doubts that you were too. And of course it's all worth it. It's no secret that I love my husband and my baby girl more than life itself. This isn't meant to be "rip on your husband day." But I'm just curious if he put a ring on it (or a necklace, or a teddy bear... whatever the case may be.)

Enlighten me, will you?

Eleven Things I'm Thankful for this Month...

Laughter
Marin has always been a giggler, but lately she has really started to crack up. She laughs at herself, at us, looking out the window... Yesterday she laughed at Norah snoring. There is a reason her nickname is "Snorah".

Wrinkle Cream
Love anything that works while I sleep!

Watching Marin Imagine
Here she is playing kitchen at my mom and dad's house. Their cookware cabinet is open by design, for easy access. Marin has learned that it is also easy access to discovery.

Glitter In The Air, by Pink
This song makes me happy and tingly. The lyric, "Have you ever held your breath and asked yourself; Will it ever get any better than tonight", reminds me of the night Marin was born, and the quiet moment that the three of us shared together after we met for the first time. (to see her perform it at the Grammys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3stsDXki__U)

Deck Design Approval
The Historical Society approved our deck design, which means we get to start in on that puppy as soon as the ground thaws. If that doesn't happen soon, I might go out there with a blow dryer to help it along. Do you think my neighbors would call the funny farm to haul me away? If you're looking for me this summer, I plan to be a permanent fixture on that deck.

Celebrating Friends
Last Saturday I celebrated a friend's upcoming wedding to her perfect match at her bridal shower, followed immediately by a baby shower for another friend who is overjoyed to become a mother, and rounded out the day at another friends Martinis and PJ's party where I got to meet her new puppy. A great day of celebrating love and joy with my dear friends at such exciting times in their lives.

Building forts
We got Marin's new car seat last week, and of course we made a fort out of the box, straight away. Sunday, Marin, Norah and I were all in the box together.

My husband's handiness
Jason has done SO much work to make our house a home. And he does it happily, with excitement, even when he is doing it the way I ask. He recently made banquette seats for the kitchen table; I'm in love. I'm certainly glad to have hooked this one; he's quite the catch.

The New Old Spice Commercial

"Look at your man. Now back to me. Now back at your man. Now back to me.... This is an oyster, filled with tickets to that thing you love; the oysters are turning to diamonds... I'm on a horse." Hysterical. I can't get enough. (if you don't know what I'm talking about view it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owGykVbfgUE)

My parents
Bottom line: We couldn't live here and do what we do without their help. They are the greatest.

Spring has sprung
At the risk of jinxing it, I think spring is here. The sun is out, the sky is blue, the birds are chirping, the snow is melting, and it is light after 5pm. Hip, hip, hooray!

What are you thankful for this month?
