"I've Never - Mommies Edition"

If you were born between the years 1965 and 1990, you've played (or at least heard of) the game "I've Never". Those of you who say you haven't, are either lying or are boring.

For what I'm guessing is decades, college students across this great country of ours have sat in tiny crowded dorm rooms with a case of the cheapest beer they could convince someones older brother or sister to buy, to play "I've Never"; the game where you drink too much and share too much- both on purpose. One person says something that they supposedly never did, and if you have done that thing, you drink. It's a very mature and sophisticated game. Your parents tuition dollars hard at work.

When I became a mother, and my inhibitions were thrown out with the days of uninterrupted sleep, I began to laugh to myself at some of the things I was doing and the places in which I was doing them. One trip to play group made me quickly realize that I wasn't alone. So I got to thinking, what if mothers got together and played "I've Never - Mommies Edition"? Imagine what they'd have to share! My guess is that it would be enough to make the college kids nicely buzzed on Natural Light, stare bug eyed and wince.

So in the spirit of fun and full disclosure, here is the part of the fictional "I've Never - Mommies Edition" that would have me motioning to the bartender for a refill:

- I've Never breastfed my baby in the backseat of my car.
- I've Never breastfed my baby in a dressing room.
- I've Never breastfed my baby in front of my dad.
- I've Never breastfed my baby in front of a stranger.
- I've Never licked a pacifier after it fell to the floor, convinced that my saliva alone made it clean enough to give back to the baby.
- I've Never sat in on a conference call while using my breastpump.
- I've Never led a conference call while using my breastpump.
- I've Never knowingly put on clothes with spit up on them.
- I've Never blotted purred peas off my shirt to avoid an outfit change.
- I've Never used the restroom with my baby on my lap.
- I've Never changed a diaper in a bar.
- I've Never changed my shirt at a stoplight.
- I've Never left the crib bumper on even thought the book said I should remove it.
- I've Never sang the same nursery rhyme for an hour straight because it made my baby smile.
- I've Never put the aspirator up my own nose to be sure it worked.
- I've Never been seduced at the thought of mom jeans.
- I've Never sat in the bathtub just a few minutes longer when the baby began to fuss through the monitor.
- I've Never worried about something ridiculous, then talked myself out of it, only to worry about something bigger.
- I've Never thought my kid was cuter than your kid.
-I've Never stood over my baby's crib watching her chest rise and fall to be sure she was still breathing.
- I've Never dreamt of a playroom.
- I've Never fantasized about my husband changing diapers and folding onesies simultaneously.
- I've Never convinced myself that Karen Neuburger nightgowns were as sexy as they are comfortable.
- I've Never sniffed an article of the clothing, passed it to my husband and asked, "Is this dirty?"
- I've Never pumped and dumped- the next morning.
- I've Never gone to the park in my pajamas.
- I've Never reheated my coffee five times in one morning.
- I've Never begged to go to Bunko.
- I've Never not brushed my teeth until noon.

I've done some crazy things as a mother. Definitely things "I never" dreamt I'd do, when I was young and naive in college and likened motherhood to babysitting . But in a circle of my own kind- perhaps during a girls night out- with the kids safely asleep in their suffocation hazard free cribs, and our husbands in charge of their midnight diaper changes- after a few rounds of "I've Never - Mommies Edition", we'd all be drowning in our cosmos. Only instead of hiding our shame after admitting to all of your dorm floor that you have fantasized about your RA; in the "Mother's Edition" we'd hold our head's high with pride at the lengths we went to love our babies. Even if it came at the price of close to indecent exposure in a public place.

Marin's First Halloween!

Trick or Treat!!

Marin had a great first Halloween! Auntie Molly made Marin this adorable Candy Corn costume from scratch! Can you see the booties?! She made those, too! And without a pattern! She just dreamt them up! They are so cute I could die! In fact, Molly had to modify the entire costume, because the pattern was for an older child. Is there anything Molly can't do? I'll spare you the breath, and just answer "no". The girl can seriously do it all, and we are certainly grateful to be the recipients of her craftiness!

Before Miss Kathy left for vacation, she organized a Halloween party at Marin's daycare. It was darling. All of the children dressed up, and Miss Kathy asked the neighbors on her street if we could come trick or treating a week early. Marin got more adoring coos than she did candy, but Mommy still enjoyed a few pieces. :)

Thursday night we carved pumpkins together. Marin was so curious about the process and the goo that came out from the inside of the pumpkins. When we got downright silly, Marin really looked at us all like we were nuts, but squealed in delight despite the fact. And then we put her in the pumpkin. That's where she drew the line.

Saturday we headed to the Illinois vs. Michigan game for the afternoon, with Molly and Brian. My parents and Jason's family were also there, and everyone loved seeing Marin all bundled in her costume. Since both Molly and Brian are Michigan alumni, it was a friendly rivalry that, by shock to all parties, ended in Illinois' favor. With so few wins this season, we Illlini fans celebrated like it was the National Championship. Molly and Brian were great sports and let us revel in our few hours of victory fueled pride.

We ended the weekend with a Martin Family dinner last night with Uncle Jake and Aunt Katy. Marin took the week long festivities in stride, proving to be quite the party animal. Sure, we think this is cute now... but someone remind us of this when she is in high school. :)

Great Aunt Vee and Me!

Jason's Aunt Laveda is here for two weeks watching Marin, while Miss Kathy, who runs Marin's daycare, is on vacation. Marin has been having so much fun with her Great Aunt Vee! We feel so lucky to have her help!

In case you are wondering, no, we aren't living in our house yet; so for those of you doing the mental math of total household members in my parent's house, yes, that makes 5 adults, 1 baby and 1 overbearing dog (who thinks she's the baby). Despite the fact that this situation is reminiscent of the turn of the century when multiple generations on both sides of the family lived under one roof, we are having fun together! We have had dinner together every night and sit by the fire afterwards, watching TV and laughing together.

Luckily, Aunt Vee rolls with the punches and is literally the most easy going guest of all times. We are loving spending this time with her, and Marin is just thrilled to pieces when she wakes up in the morning and her Great Aunt is there again! Marin has been showing off all of her tricks- including how she walks around, and around, and around the coffee table, and with each rotation shows an excitement level higher than the last lap, as if it were all new to her. She has shown her Great Aunt Vee how she climbs stairs and pulls up on ev-er-y-thing and how she dances the day away! They have taken walks to the park, and have played with the Tupperware and in the pots and pans, and Marin has snuggled up in Aunt Vee's arms for a comfy afternoon nap.

Even Norah has gotten in on this gig! Of course she thinks Aunt Vee is here to entertain her, as well. But she is also taking advantage of the afternoon walks and two constant playmates on the floor.

We love you Aunt Vee. Thank you.

Even though I'm a mom...

Even though I'm a mom, I still....
- like to play in the leaves
- lick the cookie beaters (okay, and the bowl if we're being honest)
- hate doing chores
- say the wrong things
- have nightmares
- like to go to my Grandma's house
- sometimes drink too much
- cover my eyes during the scary parts
- pout
- eat mac 'n cheese
- need my mom or dad when I am sad
- ask "why?"
- giggle
- like to be tucked in and kissed goodnight

Because I am a mom, I....
- smile
- will get to say, "Because I said so"
- know CPR
- pout
- make the rules
- know the true meaning of happiness
- laugh
- sometimes drink too much
- hold my husband a little tighter
- worry
- need girls nights
- want to make the world a better place
- leave the dishes for tomorrow
- say words like "Bottom" and "BM"
- love

Tiny Diva

Yesterday, Marin wore her Juicy Couture sweatsuit from Miss Joey, and turned into an instant diva. Here she is scoring a lunch reservation at a perpetually booked hot spot.

Then she says, "Mom, I really have to get on the road and cannot possibly be bothered with your pictures right now."

Luckily, by the time we got to the park, she forgot that she was riding first class, and was herself again! She loves the park!

Let's Play!

This is just a fly by post to share a few pictures.

Both Marin and Norah lined their toys up in front of me the other day as if to say, "Let's play, Mom!"

And Marin is both getting in the spirit of the season and paying homage to the 80's! She wore her "Ghouls just wanna have fun" shirt to daycare today!

Our Weekend Together!

Lately, one or both of us have been gone or busy too often! This past weekend, the three of us barely left each others sides from Friday night to Sunday night, and it was the BEST!

Friday was Jason and my five year wedding anniversary. We celebrated by dinner out, just down the street from our new house. Marin came with us, and although she was equally interested in eating Jason's pork chop and the tablecloth, she enjoyed her bottle at the table. Everyone around us (literally every table) commented on how good Marin was. She really was very well behaved. She just sat there like a perfect angel, quietly playing with her toys and looking around at the people, charming the heck out of the neighboring tables.
At dinner, as we always do on our anniversary, Jason and I talked about our wedding day and the memorable days in between. We both agreed that the best of those days by far, was the day that Marin was born. She must have appreciated the kind words that we had for her, because at the end of the night, she reached for the check.

Saturday morning we woke up bright and early and headed to Champaign for Marin's very first football game! Oskee-wow-wow!! She did a great job during the game, taking in the bright orange color everywhere. The game was an ugly one for the Illini, so we're hoping that she didn't pick up the choice words flying from the mouths of some of the fans near us. Still, we had a great time. Marin loved the band, and snuggled up after the game for a nap right in the middle of our tailgate.

That evening we headed to the farm to visit with Great Grandpa Hinrichs, Great Aunt Vee, Great Uncle Bob, Neal and Nicole. Marin showed off all of her new tricks and made Great Grandpa's day by crawling right to him, and pulling herself up on his chair. Great Aunt Vee had new toys for Marin- her favorite was a dolly that gave kisses and said, "I love you!" After a delicious meal, we all settled in and spent the night in the peace and quiet of the country air. Marin slept so soundly, we had to literally rouse her the next morning when it was time to eat and get on the road.

Sunday afternoon we went to Marin's future husband's baptism. :) Kai William, our friend Erica and Craig's new baby was baptised on a gorgeous fall, sunny day! Marin did a lot of flirting and more hamming it up to try and steel the show, than she did sitting quietly in prayer, but at least she was good. Erica and Craig hosted a fun reception afterwards in their beautiful home, topped off with taffy apples and a special book for everyone!

Time together at the end of a busy week is such a blessing. I wouldn't trade all the excitement in the world, for a weekend sitting on the floor with Marin watching her discover; Jason at my side.
